My first involvement with documentary production was working on the series 'Naked Planet' with Max McMullin at CDA in 1998; we produced sequences for six episodes and over the summer I collaborated with each show director, from the Dead Sea and Uluru to Mount Kilimanjero and the Grand Canyon. We also worked with Discovery on a history programme that needed a reconstruction of the Giza pyramids and Karnak as well as other ancient sites in Egypt. These experiences introduced me to the practice that is documentary filmmaking, a delightful sequence of learning and discovery enriching and informing the creative process.
At Shroom my experience differed as we made the animated Emily James' econo-pic 'The Luckiest Nut'. The methods and practices we perfected on this production were to define our role within documentary. An ability to tell stories at the same time as convey information gave us an economy of time that was to culminate in the production of 'TERRA 2050' and further in the production of sequences for the BBC series 'Mishchief'. We also made titles, maps and sequences with Mayavision for their 'Shakespeare' and 'Myth and Heroes' series. Also at shroom, we were involved in the lengthy production of 'The Whale Film' produced by Kass Kassander, making titles as well as several animated segments of the film, from a guide of to different classifications and species of cetacean, to the end sequence where our hero is proverbially eaten by a giant (computer generated) baleen whale.
During 2007, I again worked with Mayavision, producing sequences and directing titles for their series 'The Story of India'. This year I have been working closely with BBC Vision, a production department with a team in Bristol. We have developed a 4x1 hour semi animated documentary series and produced a teaser for it. I worked with producer Seb Barfield, co-writing a script and directed the shoot in a green screen facility. I then coordinated and directed the post production of the edited rushes into animated scenes, working on the artwork myself with three illustrator-animators to assist.
